Initially, my project will consist of an exploration of the feasibility (challenges, problems, advantages, etc.) of implementing problem based laboratory experiences into Introductory Chemistry. This will necessitate an in-depth exploration of problem-based learning as well as a deepening of my understanding of student traits (motivation, self-confidence, performance, etc.). And finally it will require the development of real-world problems that can be tackled successfully and confidently by introductory chemistry students.

Problem based learning is a constructivist learning strategy. Students work as members of teams using cooperative group strategies on context driven inquiries. Because there are no "correct answers" there is a certain amount of ambiguity in the problems the students will address. Each "problem" will span an interval of several weeks. This type of learning environment is very different from the traditional introductory chemistry lab experience which focuses on instructor directed labs, each completed in one lab-period.

It is hoped that the project will result in a learning experience for students that will augment their group learning skills, their problem solving ability and their oral and written communication skills. The created learning experience should help students connect chemical theory to their real lives and should generate positive attitudes among students toward both school science and real world science.

As a scientist my joy was in lab work not in memorizing facts. This project will provide me with a venue for sharing that joy of investigation and discovery with students who may experience only one or two science classes in their college careers.
