MIL Project Description
I will develop a mode of assessment that places students into a problem solving context, requires them to work as a team, communicate mathematically, and connect multiple representations of the mathematics. Students will receive a letter addressed to them from a famous character from television or a movie. Playing the role of mathematical consultant, students will respond to the mathematical situation by writing a letter in return. This letter must clearly explain the conclusions reached by the group, include mathematical justifications, and require students to apply their mathematical understanding to a unique problem situation.
Through innovative writing projects, student understanding of mathematical concepts at the three calculus levels will be enhanced by:
- engaging students in critical mathematical thought by solving problems in context;
- working as a team toward a common goal;
- communicating mathematically using current software packages;
- connecting the multiple representations of the mathematical concepts.
