1. Analyzing "The Simpsons"
Here's a fun way to get students analyzing something many of them watch every weekday:"The Simpsons"! This activity will enable students to expand their critical thinking skills when they are "spudding out" in front of the TV, plus the exercise is an excellent starter for an analytic essay. Symbols are an important part of literature. To read a work on a literal level does not require any understanding of symbols. But understanding symbols is pertinent to reading on a deeper, philosophical level.

4. Exploring Literary Criticism in Film and Literature
The purpose of my project was to explore the mythic roots in film and literature. I researched the theory of archetypes and literary/film devices, read a number of novels/novellas and then viewed their film version to explore how each story conformed to a mythic tradition.

5. Pop Culture Bingo
I like to start the first day of class with an icebreaker for students to get to know each other. My ENG 102 class is centered around pop culture, so I decided to ask questions to test pop culture literacy.
