In healthcare, specifically the diagnostic imaging environment requires students to process information at an analysis, synthesis and application level; a much higher expectation than at a knowledge level. Therefore the students need to develop and expand their critical thinking skills to be successful in their clinical settings and in didactic (lecture) courses.

Each lesson includes an essay describing one or more important critical-thinking topics followed by questions that test students on what was learned. The lessons are written in a self-study format.

8. The Utilization of Case Studies to Enhance Critical Thinking Skills in Dental Hygiene Students (Phoenix College)

A comprehensive series of ten Dental Hygiene case studies will be developed to enhance student learning and to prepare students for their National Board Examination (which consists of 50% case studies), but more importantly, to build their comptence in critical thinking, problem solving and applying their knowledge to clinical cases. To accomplish this task, two of the faculty members from the Phoenix College Dental Hygiene Program will observe and assist in periodontal dental practices, both private and public health, to gather information and document actual case studies of patients treated in these facilities. Case studies will be developed by the faculty which will then be presented to the students over the two years that they are enrolled in the program.
