Peer workshop groups are an integral part of most composition classes. In an effort to engage students as active learners and help them appreciate the valuable feedback that their peers can provide for their essay drafts, I have adopted the following model that has been successful for draft response workshops.

In this assignment, students write a letter to me showing their personal history of civic engagement.
3. A Woman's Bond: Revisiting, Revising, and Revisioning Heroes, Heroines, and History in Film (Mesa Community College)

I examined how current films are revisioning the roles of women and men in society and in history. Through research in articles, books, films, and student interviews, I was able to discover how films define gender roles in society.
4. A Worldwide Collection of Poems (Estrella Mountain Community College)

I collected poems from various countries for this project. I was able to obtain poems from Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the Phillipines, Mexico, and several other countries. I was able to obtain poems from people who are Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian.

The African American Literature project includes doing a presentation on an African American author and his/her work. The handout includes a list of over 100 African American novels.
6. American Experience: Oral History Project (Chandler-Gilbert Community College)

Students in The American Experience--an English 101 and History 103 learning community--captured oral histories of individuals from long-standing families of Gilbert and then prepared them for the Gilbert Historical Society.

8. Analyzing "The Simpsons" (Estrella Mountain Community College)

Here's a fun way to get students analyzing something many of them watch every weekday:"The Simpsons"! This activity will enable students to expand their critical thinking skills when they are "spudding out" in front of the TV, plus the exercise is an excellent starter for an analytic essay.
9. Assessing ESL Student Speech (GateWay Community College, Phoenix College)

Phoenix College and GateWay Community College ESL faculty partnered to learn more effective ways to assess the oral production of ESL students. To do this we identified the four-day Oral Proficiency Interview workshop (OPI) conducted by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACFLT) as a way to equip ESL teachers with skills to advance and assess fluency and accuracy in the speech of ESL students. The workshop was conducted at Phoenix College in January of 2006.
10. Ballot Propostions Assignment (Phoenix College)

Every fall semester in election years the students in my CRE 101 and other reading classes students must work in pairs to discuss the pro and con sides of the Arizona ballot proposition they have chosen. I provide pamphlets to all students. After their presentaions we hold a mock election on the propositions in each class. I also assist studenst in registering to vote on-line.
