Information Literacy/Library Instruction

summary

I attended the Loex of the West Information Literacy/Library Instruction Conference from June 8-10th in Hawaii.

details

For my summer project, I attended the Loex of the West Information Literacy/Library Instruction Conference from June 8-10th in Hawaii.
As the Instructional Services Librarian at MCC, one of my primary responsibilities is the coordination of the non-credit library instruction program. This conference was directly applicable to my daily responsiblities.

------------------------------------------------------------
Outcomes: In a paragraph or two describe what worked well. Did you accomplish your objective(s)? Were you able to complete your summer project as written? If not, what did you modify and why? What did not go as well as expected, if anything? Were there any surprises? Note: Use the questions as guides for your outcomes. Do not include detailed list of workshops attended, speakers who presented, or a list of items you have seen, heard, or read.
------------------------------------------------------------
One of my objectives was to have an opportunity to stay current in the library instruction field. I met this objective as I attended an array of sessions that covered topics such as information literacy tutorials, student cyber-socializing, assessment tools, distance education, and problem based learning techniques in library instruction.

Another objective was to network with a diverse group of academic librarians. This was my first academic library conference, and what a wonderful experience! Since the attendance was limited to 200 attendees, it was a great opportunity to meet and work with librarians from a wide range of academic institutions. It was beneficial to meet and discuss, with fellow academic librarians, some of the issues that I have faced at MCC. As a result, I received many valuable suggestions/feedback. Many of the librarians attend this conference every two years and it was inspiring to see librarians get reacquainted, hear about past conferences and listen to plans for the conference in 2008. In addition, and perhaps this could be considered a “surprise” in a way, I had the opportunity to get to know other MCCD librarians. This was certainly a wonderful chance (away from scheduled meetings etc) to see what they have been doing at their respective colleges, and to get to know them “outside the office.”

Finally, one lovely “surprise” was the “Hawaiiana Program” that was infused throughout the program. The native programs included: Big Island Talk Story, Hawaiian Tattoos and Petroglyphs and Passing Information from One Generation to the Next Through Hula.

"If you plan for a year, plant kalo.
If you plan for ten years, plant kao.
If you plan for one hundred years, teach the children."

(Hawaiian Proverb from the program)

------------------------------------------------------------
Professional Growth: Your own professional growth is a large part of your project. Your professional growth is important to you, your students, your college, and possibly other colleagues. How did project affect you professionally? What skills did you learn? What environments were you working in and how might your summer project influence your teaching or other responsibilities? Did you gain a different perspective? Was it professionally valuable for you?
------------------------------------------------------------
This project contributed to my professional growth in two distinct areas: skills and networking. Since I am the Instructional Services Librarian and coordinate the non-credit library instruction program, the “library instruction/information literacy” focus of this conference was important to me. The 45 minute, small sized sessions offered me many opportunities to strengthen my librarian instruction skills. I acquired many ideas and materials that will be incorporated into our library instruction program. Since I work closely with the Information Literacy Librarian at MCC, many of the materials and knowledge gained at this conference will be incorporated into many of our projects. In terms of networking, this was a rich opportunity. I had an opportunity to meet librarians from across the board in terms of size of institution, experience and expertise. (The session with the librarian from Dine College, AZ was amazing.) In addition, the opportunity to get acquainted with MCCD librarians (outside of the MCCD setting!) was invaluable.

------------------------------------------------------------
Dissemination: How will you share this information with your colleagues, department, students, or college?
------------------------------------------------------------
The information acquired will be shared one on one with colleagues, with colleagues in department meetings, and with faculty, across the curriculum, as I set up library instruction sessions and work with the Information Literacy program. Students will benefit as many of these skills will be incorporated into my library instruction sessions and into our library instruction program.
