I was able to further my computer modeling and animation skills through a series of tutorials with Combustion, a 3D post-production editing software. Through the tutorials I gained specific skills in the general post production process in the following areas: using and adjusting color; composting: paint operators: tracking: particles: text; and compositing. Starting literally from scratch in terms of animation post production skills, the tutorials walked me through the post production process and I have gained many useful editing skills through this project. The project was done mostly at home on my studio desk top or on my laptop when traveling. I enjoyed the process and found that I could work comfortably at my own pace. Overall time was approximately 100 hours between Summer I and Summer II, although I’m still reviewing some of the tutorials!
------------------------------------------------------------
Outcomes: In a paragraph or two describe what worked well. Did you accomplish your objective(s)? Were you able to complete your summer project as written? If not, what did you modify and why? What did not go as well as expected, if anything? Were there any surprises? Note: Use the questions as guides for your outcomes. Do not include detailed list of workshops attended, speakers who presented, or a list of items you have seen, heard, or read.
------------------------------------------------------------
The tutorials were excellent. The text included a CD with beginning scenes that were then edited as required. Thus, you were able to see the results of each tutorial immediately. I was, by and large, able to accomplish all of my objectives. Two of the most significant outcomes were in how to use and build particle systems and learning 3D compositing techniques. My final objective of integration with 3D Studio Max was met, enabling me to take the finished product from Max and further enhance the animation with Combustion. As stated above, I continue to review some of the tutorials to get a better understanding of some of the processes due to their complexity. While a great software package, it is not user friendly and does require review. Yet, the tutorials were very helpful in learning how to navigate the software.
I really did not modify anything in the project, as the tutorials are skilled based and each one builds on the previous one. However, in order to complete all the tutorials and my objectives, I extended beyond the contracted time, which was not a problem.

Professional Growth: Your own professional growth is a large part of your project. Your professional growth is important to you, your students, your college, and possibly other colleagues. How did project affect you professionally? What skills did you learn? What environments were you working in and how might your summer project influence your teaching or other responsibilities? Did you gain a different perspective? Was it professionally valuable for you?
------------------------------------------------------------
My project has enabled me to further my knowledge and skills in 3D Animation for architecture and stage design work. This will be of benefit to me in two ways. First, professionally, the world of 3D Animation for architecture and theatre is a burgeoning area. I am one of the few stage designers in the region who now has the capability to edit and thus enhance 3D animations in a post-production format. As a stage designer, producers that I work for are very excited about being able to see the designs for their productions in a 3D, animated world. With this technology productions can be visualized before they are built and any problems with the settings can immediately be seen and corrected. Secondly, this has strengthened my skills and knowledge for the classroom, as this is the software we will be using in our new class DFT 264, Post Production Editing, for our proposed 3D Architectural Animation certificate for Industrial Technology.
This project was very valuable to me professionally, as well as for my teaching.
------------------------------------------------------------
Dissemination: How will you share this information with your colleagues, department, students, or college?
------------------------------------------------------------
I will be using the software to edit animated sequences for our Theatre Department productions. These animated sequences of setting are valuable tools for the faculty directors and technical staff to see what the finished product will look like. These are also shared with the student actors and technicians.
We will be using the software directly in our CAD lab for the students in the DFT 264 class for our proposed new certificate program. I will also be sharing my knowledge of the software and demonstrating the software to faculty members in the Industrial Technology Department.
