Physics

summary

PHY 112 requires that students explore the world of (what used to be called) Modern Physics. This project allows for that.

details

I continue to use a project-based format in my classes. The 3rd project for PHY 112 this semester asks students to explore some aspect of “Modern Physics” that might be nearest and dearest to their lives. Since we have Pre-Pharm/Vet/Med/PT, aviators and others, it makes some sense to allow them to personalize their progress through these topics. I make some suggestions, but this is much more free form than the other projects. I provide them with a project description (see the supplement below) that details what the design parameters are and also includes all of the relevant physics topics that they need to consider.

Since beginning to use project-based learning, I’ve seen a bi-modal student response. Students either seem to detest it (they want standard lectures and tests) or they love it (hate lectures and tests). Regardless of students’ opinions, I’m sold!

I think students construct far more useful skills and knowledge that will stay with them by having these large contexts to organize their learning.

Great stuff like always! Please check the "mod" document uploaded- supplements must have file names that end in .XXX filenames, so the link comes through as binary yuck yuck. If you rename the file to "mod.doc" and replace the supplement, it should be okay!
