summary |
Students in my political science classes are required to attend 3 civic engagement events on or off campus, and at the end of the semester, write a reflection paper detailing their experience and their civic efficacy. |
details |
In my political sciences courses, we are examining civic engagement in general and evaluating how much students are engaged and aware of the issues from the local to the national levels. This assignment will foster civic responsibility with opportunities to be engaged.
Students are required to attend 3 required civic engagement events on or off-campus. Some on-campus events that students participated in or plan to participate in this semester include our Immigration Forum, Film Series, Education Forum, Hunger Banquet, Water Conservation Forum, and Into the Streets. Other engagement opportunities include professional internships with local business partners including the Leadership Centre and internships through our Service Learning Department.
After attending these events, students are to write a reflection paper detailing their experience. They should include the description of the event, its purpose in relation to civic engagement, information on how they could get invloved more if interested, and a summary of their personal comments. I usually ask students to include whether or not they felt engaged at the event and discuss why or why not. I also ask them to make suggetions for future events and how we could make the events better and to cater to the needs of students. This reflection should give a good indication of student's interests, efficacy levels, and motivation on the subject of civic engagement.
This assignment was also formulated in the spirit of the class objectives and the attempt to educate, inform, and to increase the participation of students in the overall democratic schema.
