Most everyone knows the power of Google for finding information on the web. But there is more to using Google than just popping in key words and hoping for good results, or just sending your students there with an assignment such as "do a search on ethics of euthanasia".
One task we see teachers spending much time on is maintaining lists of relevant course, subject, or project web sources. This takes time to compile, create the web page, check for bad links, etc. By using the power of Google, you can preview its collections of results for a certain topic, and then rather than providing your students a single or limited set of resources, you can let the Power of Google send the most relevant and current collection of web links. But even better:
* You are not dependent on a single web site for content (sites disappear, they move, or go down when you need them most).
* You are providing your students a more focussed set of links rather than just sending them to a search engine web site, and they are not spending time figuring out the mechanics of search tools.
* Your links will include newer, relevant sites that may not have been there when you first looked.
* Students are given the responsibility of evaluating content, and are encouraged to explore and think about multiple sources of information.
* Students who are search savvy can modify search criteria to refine a result.
This is likely the most simple technical skill you can learn! All you need to do is to visit Google, try some test queries until you feel the top 5 or 10 results have worthy information, and just copy the URL from the Google Search result from your browser's URL/web address tool bar.
