summary |
Negative Reinforcement University (NRU) was conceptualized by a team of four students and one faculty at Scottsdale Community College as an aid for learning one of the more challenging concepts in Introductory Psychology. |
details |
This project began as a pilot process for students and faculty teams to develop a concept and prepare a design specification for an instructional technology application. A group from Scottsdale Community College participating in the Studio 1151 project.
As decided by the group Negative Reinforcement University (NRU), would appear more like a computer game that beckons the user to explore its 3D environment. It included areas for a simulation, a lab to explore examples of negative reinforcement scripted by the development team, and an area to self-test. A design element that called for an on-screen help device lent itself to programming a system for detailed tracking and recording of student progress in the program and a tool for instructors to review that data. In the Spring of 1998, we conducted an evaluation between students who used the computer version, students who viewed a paper-based equivalent, and students who received no additional content beyond what was presented in class. The results indicate better performance by users of the computer version.
NRU features a game-like 3D environment, itself an exercise in behavioral psychology, that features an experiental simulation, a lab to explore scenario examples, and a testing room.
We have also completed an evaluation of NRU comparing students using the computer versions, to students useing a paper based version, and a control group that received no out of class supplementary information.
