summary

My service learning assignment focuses on students becoming involved in their community and voicing their opinions through letter writing. Students react to a media article on a social issue and then write the appropriate organization their ideas about the social issue. This is a great service learning assignment for sociology courses, political science, public policy and others. This assignment does not take the student to an agency or an organization. It can easily be down at the student's convenience.

details

Civic Engagement in Social Issues

Goals for assignment:
1. Critical thinking skills
2. Communication skills
3. Focus on the globe as the community
4. Activism during the course
5. Lifelong activism

1.Gather information on a social issue/social problem that needs social change. In other words, you are focusing on a social issue/social problem related to the topics covered in this course! The social issue does not have to be local. All social issues across the globe are important issues! Find at least one article (can be newspaper and/or magazine) on the social issue/social problem that needs to be addressed. Include a copy of the article with your assignment.

2. Write a summary of the social issue/social problem that needs to be addressed. Why should there be social change on this issue? Make a clear argument on why we as a society should care about this social issue/social problem. This summary should be a minimum of 2 pages typed.

3. Write a letter to the appropriate organization about your concerns and reasons for wanting social change in this area. This could be a letter to a company about lack of diversity in the company's workforce, a letter to the media regarding the lack of representation of diversity or the misrepresentation of information on a topic, a letter to a congressperson regarding a social issue. The letter must be written appropriately with a sender’s address and a recipient’s address. The letter must be a minimum of 1 page typed. Be professional and convincing in your letter. Include a copy of your letter with the assignment.

4. Mail your letter by the due date of the assignment. Once you get a response, please share with the class!

The goals for the assignment are critical thinking skills, communication skills, focus on the globe as the community, activism during the course and lifelong activism. As I read it I kept thinking that something like this is just made to order for students on blogs. You could adapt it a little and it would be great to use as a springboard for writing on blogs.

Sharebacks can be generated automatically by weblog tools.
