summary

After the Maricopa Community College Dialogue Day on electronic portfolios (e-portfolios), many of the faculty at Chandler-Gilbert Community College were inspired by the potential offered by the use of these tools. At a subsequent meeting of the Faculty Development Team, a summer institute for faculty was planned to explore the use of e-portfolios, to examine the tools currently available and to test a pilot of an in-house system developed by Audree Thurman, Chandler-Gilbert’s Enterprise Application designer. The system was rolled out in Fall 2003 after modifications were made based on feedback from the institute. The immediate response was overwhelmingly positive, as over 400 e-portfolios were created in the first semester alone, and interest in the project continues to grow.

details

(This initiative is Chandler-Gilbert's 2004 Innovation of the Year.)

Since its unveiling in the summer of 2003, Chandler-Gilbert has embraced MyEport because it provides a creative outlet for students’ ever-increasing use of technology and expands instructors’ use of portfolios as an effective means of assessing student learning. As the first college in the district to develop its own e-portfolio system, Chandler-Gilbert recognizes the multiple purposes that portfolios serve. Most important, the dynamic nature of MyEport offers students a variety of opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills throughout their tenure at CGCC. The opportunities that MyEport provides include
• publishing their best work for a global audience
• posting their own video assignments
• keeping an electronic journal (web log or blog)of their progress in a class.

Chandler-Gilbert students using MyEport have expressed their enthusiasm and pride about having a “web presence” that details their academic career. Additionally, because the information is collected and stored electronically, instructors are better able to manage the large volume of work included in student portfolios (as opposed to paper portfolios), thus they can provide students with more comprehensive and timely feedback.
