(This initiative is Mesa's 2004 Innovation of the Year.)
The Center for Global Tolerance and Engagement was created by the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department in the spring of 2002. The idea for the Center originated, in part, in response to the tragedy that occurred on September 11, 2001. In the days following September 11th, the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department received numerous requests for faculty in Religious Studies to speak about Islam and for faculty in Philosophy to speak about terrorism. Members of the department realized that we are in the unique position of having faculty members who have studied morality from both the philosophical and the religious perspective. We also have faculty who have studied the major religions of the world. This being the case we felt an obligation to create a Center that could offer programs that support global tolerance and the concept of worldwide civic engagement. The mission of the Center is two-fold:
1) To help foster a sustainable environment for global tolerance and engagement in our pluralistic world, and
2) To promote understanding of different worldviews on religion and ethics.
With this mission as its goal, the Center has hosted over twenty (20) events during the past two years of its existence and was recognized in Mesa Community College’s 2002-2005 Strategic Plan for its contribution to accomplishing the institution’s diversity-related goals.
