summary

In a unique and unprecedented collaboration, the Phoenix College Alumni Association, a grassroots volunteer based organization, and the Phoenix College Counseling Department launched a successful partnership in 2002-2003 to deliver financial literacy workshops to students and parents enrolled in the college’s ACE (Achieving a College Education) Program.

details

(This initiative is Phoenix College's 2004 Innovation of the Year.)

Arizona’s high school dropout rate is one of the highest in the nation. According to a 2000 report from the National Center for Education Statistics, Arizona has the second highest dropout rate in the United States at 8.4%. In an effort to address the problem, the Phoenix College Counseling Department sought to establish an ACE (Achieving a College Education) Program in 2002.

In order for the Counseling Department to meet the necessary funding requirements to launch ACE at Phoenix College, it was necessary to build into the program a parental component. The goal of the parental component was to bring students and their parents together, outside of their PC classes, and involve them in a purposeful and practical educational activity at least four times during the year. It was at this time when volunteers from the Phoenix College Alumni Association (PCAA) Half-Century Club (HCC) came forward with a collaborative and innovative learning opportunity focusing on financial literacy for high school students.
