summary |
SUCCEED/ACE is a scholarship-based high school early outreach and college preparation program. It is designed to take the intimidation factor out of college for high school students who would be first generation college students and might be at-risk of not enrolling and succeeding in a college or university environment. |
details |
(This initiative is Paradise Valley\'s 2004 Innovation of the Year.)
The mission of the SUCCEED Program at Paradise Valley Community College is to increase the number of ELL students graduating from high school and successfully transitioning into higher education. The program is a collaborative effort involving Paradise Valley Community College and three feeder high schools from the Paradise Valley Unified School District. Target population is high school juniors and seniors who, without the support of the SUCCEED/ACE Program, would be at-risk of not succeeding in a higher educational environment. Most of the program\'s participants are first generation college students. These students enroll in a block program of six college credits each semester of the first year. This block includes Business Personal Computer and Counseling/ Personal Development courses. The students then continue by taking two more Counseling/ Personal Development credits, a Marketing Leadership credit, and six credits of their choice the following year. SUCCEED/ACE began operation in fall 2000 when the first cohort of students began college course work. The program now has a seven-semester record offering concurrently enrolled high school students the opportunity to complete up to 21 college credits. The college preparation component of the program has set an impressive record of preparing students to enter college, complete college course work, transfer to a 4-year university, or enter the labor force.
