Project team members identified a need to improve the quality of online Computer Information Systems Department courses in order to increase student success and retention. Through the team’s collaborative efforts, two Orientation Programs were designed and developed. The Student Orientation Program was designed to prepare students to successfully face the challenges of an online Computer Information Systems course. The Faculty Orientation Program was designed to provide faculty with additional tools and resources to enhance the quality of their online courses. |

(This initiative is Scottsdale's 2004 Innovation of the Year.)
The two Orientation Programs were designed and developed in the Summer of 2003. The team gathered “best practices” in online teaching and learning from current research, as well as from their own experiences and those of their colleagues. Through this process, they identified many opportunities to impact the quality of online courses in the CIS Department. Some of the opportunities identified included:
• Preparing students for success in the online learning environment
• Increasing student motivation and retention
• Aligning student expectations with the realities of online learning
• Streamlining online courses formats and the development processes used to create course content
• Defining and communicating faculty expectations and providing resources to meet them
Each Orientation Program contains approximately 1½ hours of engaging, interactive, multimedia content. The programs incorporate video, audio, web pages, documents, presentations, and online demonstrations.
The Student Orientation to Online Learning program focuses on the following:
• Skills and characteristics of successful online learners
• Features of online courses that make them different from other course formats
• Self evaluation for prospective online learners (including assessment of skills, learning styles, and expectations) and advise on how to strengthen their potential weaknesses
• Required computer equipment and software
• Tips and tutorials on using Blackboard, the web-based course management system that delivers our online courses
The Faculty Orientation to Online Teaching program focuses on the following:
• Training opportunities and learning resources available to online instructors
• Defining and communicating course design and delivery expectations
• Identifying components of quality online courses, and corresponding resources to create them
• Providing course development tools, including online course syllabi and quality checklists
• Making available preformatted Blackboard course templates to guide and facilitate course design and development
