summary	The Bilingual Nursing Fellows Program is a partnership between South Mountain Community College, GateWay Community College and Arizona’s largest health provider, Banner Health, who came together to find a way to meet growth needs in professional nursing positions, especially for Spanish speaking nurses.
details	(This initiative is South Mountain's 2004 Innovation of the Year.) Only 4% of Arizona’s 33,135 active nurses is Hispanic while the Hispanic population constitutes 25% of the state population and grew by 88% according to the 2000 U.S. Census. (source: AZ Governor’s Nursing Shortage Task Force 2002) The Bilingual Nursing Fellowship Program is a high profile three-year program to increase the retention and graduation of professional nurses in under-represented populations in Maricopa County. South Mountain Community College, GateWay Community College and Banner Health collaborated to attract retain, graduate, and employ Spanish speaking undergraduate students interested in obtaining an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree (AAS). The selected Banner Fellows are tracked and monitored as a cohort and receive extensive academic support services. After three years, the participants earn an Associate in Applied Sciences Degree in Nursing and are prepared for RN licensure. South Mountain Community College coordinates the program, leverages its presence in the minority community for participant recruitment and support, and provides instructional expertise in preparing students by offering all Nursing prerequisites. GateWay Community College provides its fully developed Nursing Program and state-of-the-art Center for Health Careers which includes classrooms and labs modeled after a fully functioning hospital. Banner Health provides ready access to the workplace, industry expertise, and ultimately, an employment track for program. Note!
