We became interested in PBL because we wanted to improve the problem-solving skills of our community college math students. During the spring semester of 1996, I was searching through problem-solving resources on the Web. I was looking specifically for teaching techniques, and I discoverd the PBL website at Southern Illinois University Medical School. All of our reading convinced us that PBL was a process that could help us reach our goal. UBUYACAR includes a student and a teacher manual that addresses this problem: "You are interested in purchasing a new vehicle. What should your annual salary be to afford the car you want?" This module includes suggestions for the student (and tutor), some basic math needed to determine a debt to income ratio, internet sources that can be used to find the data to used, plus some assessment and evaluation templates. This module has been peer reviewed by MERLOT and is included as an Eisenhower National Clearinghouse (ENC) Digital Dozen Note!
