summary |
The Report Information System (RIS) is GateWay’s central Web-based reporting tool for enterprise data. RIS delivers over 300 on-demand reports supporting business processes for Administration, Student Services, and Instruction. RIS has enabled Operations to cut paper consumption by 60% while delivering reports in a secure, personalized, and efficient manner. |

(This initiative is GateWay's 2005 Innovation of the Year.)
Technologies Utilized
* Operational Data Store (ODS) – Doug Allenberg has implemented this system which converts legacy SIS data into a Microsoft SQL Server database on a daily basis
* ASP and ASP.NET – Microsoft Active Server Pages allow Gateway’s Programming Team to quickly translate data sources into dynamic Web pages.
* Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) – Encryption is used to make sure that sensitive data is accessed only by authorized GateWay users.
Key Features of RIS
* Access to Legacy SIS data in an Online, On-demand Format – RIS uses the power of modern database systems to empower users to run a variety of reports. It will continue to provide value even after the New SIS comes by allowing us to access historical data.
* 20 Different Categories of On-demand Reports – Including student demographics, course/enrollment, instructor, campus inventory, Financial Assistance, Maricopa Skill Center, GateWay Early College, room utilization, test scores, ESL, College Safety and more.
* Secure Browsing of Reports – Users must be authenticated and authorized to access RIS. Data is transmitted securely over the Web through the use of SSL encryption.
* Intuitive Interface – Creativity and careful planning were needed to find ways for users to quickly sort through hundreds of reports and get to the ones they need.
* Personalized Report Viewing – Users’ report viewing habits are tracked and users are presented with quick links to their personal:
* Top 10 most frequently used reports
* 10 most recently viewed reports
* Reduction in Paper Consumption and Manual Report Delivery – RIS increases the efficiency of technology staff in serving the needs of our customers while reducing material and resource costs.
* Supports Business Processes of All GateWay Units – This system is heavily used by Administration, Student Services, and Instruction. (See history for usage level since April 2004). In many cases, RIS reports and calculations have replaced manual methods of data analysis, instantly delivering what would have taken weeks to manually compile.
* FERPA Compliance Priority – All RIS users are presented with a FERPA notice prior to accessing the system for the first time. Authorized users must agree to abide by privacy standards to use the system.
* Ease of Implementation at Other Colleges Running ODS – This has been demonstrated with South Mountain Community College.
