International and immigrant students learning English can now earn an academic certificate demonstrating proficiency in oral communication in English. “Communication Skills for English Language Learners” guides English Language Learners (ELL) through an academic program leading to competency in speaking English. This program of study provides continuing education for professionals, communication skill building for new immigrants, and a desired credential for international students. |

(This initiative is Mesa's 2005 Innovation of the Year.) This new curriculum greatly improves the quality of the educational opportunities for non-native English speaking students. Traditionally, learning to speak English has been under the instruction of English as a Second Language curriculum. The students coming to the community college frequently come with a strong background in the grammatical structure and vocabulary of English; however they lacked oral fluency that would allow them to easily communicate with native English speakers. Successful completion of speech communication courses proved difficult for many students who needed more practice speaking English and learning to communicate. For this reason, the Communication department developed a program of study to serve this unique student population. Note!
