summary

The Maricopa Skill Center used its own buses to bring students to school until a new look at the service found it would be environmentally-friendly and budget-smart to utilize the Valley Metro bus system. Now free bus passes give needy students unlimited transportation as long as they have good attendance.

details

(This initiative is the Maricopa Skills Center's 2005 Innovation of the Year.)

For over 40 years, the Maricopa Skill Center provided its needy students with a bus ride to and from class. The buses ran twice a day and the routes were constantly monitored to make sure they reached as many students as possible. However, over the years the inconveniences to students, the costs and liabilities to the Skill Center became stifling.

Through a team effort the Skill Center took an ‘out of the box’ approach to the transportation problem that has proven to be an excellent solution: Partner with Valley Metro to offer needy students free bus passes. Give students the added benefit of having an unrestricted bus pass for their own use as long as their class attendance meets established standards.

It works. The Skill Center redirected monies previously going to bus maintenance and operation to staff and students needs; one-fourth of Skill Center students use the free bus pass and Valley Metro gained hundreds of new riders every year. Best of all, students suddenly had real transportation at their disposal. For the first time they have transportation to job interviews and doctor appointments. The Skill Center free bus pass is a win-win for school and students alike.
