summary	The Adjunct Faculty Initiative (AFI) promotes professional growth and development of adjunct faculty consistent with Paradise Valley Community College’s core value of learning. The AFI has successfully increased the participation of adjunct faculty in programs which have been shown by national studies to promote students’ deeper learning and retention.
details	(This initiative is Paradise Valley's 2005 Innovation of the Year.) At Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) adjunct faculty teach approximately 60% of all classes, the majority of which are composed of beginning students and/or under-prepared students. The AFI began on January 17, 2001, with a meeting of interested full-time and adjunct faculty and deans of learning for the purpose of supporting the adjunct faculty in their important work. From this meeting, four key areas of future development were identified: 1. Compensation/Benefits 2. Faculty Development 3. Resources for Adjunct Faculty 4. Sense of Belonging-Connection to the Campus A Pilot Program funded through a supplemental budget request for one-time-only funds was initiated in February, 2001, and the Adjunct Faculty Initiative Committee was formed. The following is a report on the progress of this committee. Note!
