summary

Since January 2000, responding to the needs of the community, the ESL Program at Scottsdale Community College has planned and implemented English language training for such diverse businesses as hospitality, landscaping, construction, and the automobile industry. This innovative effort has contributed to an increase of over 1000% in ESL enrollment.

details

(This initiative is Scottsdale's 2005 Innovation of the Year.)

Dr. Decabooter, President of Scottsdale Community College, has always said that "community" is our middle name. In that spirit, SCC expanded the English as a Second Language program (ESL) into the local community in January 2000. This proved to be a wise decision and one in which the college would not only provide English language training to those in the area, but also become involved and work with businesses in the local community. At that time, SCC's ESL program consisted of approximately 115 students in nine or ten sections. Today under the cooperative leadership and support of the innovative team, SCC's ESL program has one of the most vibrant programs in Arizona and has around 1,200 students in about sixty sections. That is an increase of over 1,000% in just five years. Such success has obviously taken not only long hours and hard work, but more importantly, a planned logical expansion of offered classes, good use of marketing, and a concerted effort to contact local businesses and offer them the services of SCC's ESL program.
