summary

SABiCo developed a comprehensive biotechnology curriculum with research quality facilities creating a charter high school, MI/HSI community college, and university pathway. Students learn science concepts as they conduct original research in association with four residential Ph.D.'s, USDA, and U.C. San Diego's Supercomputer Human Genome Project. Students may present their scientific findings at national symposia and apply for bio-industry and federal government internships. Enrollment was 36 in Spring 2003, 115 in Fall 2004, and is projected at 230 in 2005.

details

(This initiative is South Mountain's 2005 Innovation of the Year.)

Responding to regional, Arizona, and Maricopa Community College District initiatives for students, especially minorities, trained in bioscience to earn university degrees and gain employment, the SMCC/AAEC Bioscience Collaborative touches upon a number of identified educational need areas. The primary goal of the program is to develop a comprehensive biotechnology curriculum with research grade laboratory facilities to promote student success in biosciences. The context of the SMCC/AAEC Bioscience Collaborative is an integrated high school to college to either university or employment pipeline. In the process of developing a curriculum and the capacity to offer that curriculum, the program also focuses on ensuring a recruitment and retention strategy that increases the number and success of students entering the program. The curriculum is utilized in a highly interactive comprehensive learning environment that includes experiential learning and scientific research.
