The Arizona Master Teacher Seminar was held in Prescott, Arizona at the Emory-Riddle Aeronautical University from May 22nd to the 26th. The seminar was co-sponsored by GateWay Community College and Southwest Community College in Virginia. The seminar is designed for new and experienced high school and college faculty.
The Master Teacher Seminar concept has been sponsored in various states since 1991. Past participants have found the experience both informative and reflective. The seminar provides an opportunity for an exchange of learning, teaching, and pedagogy. The focus of discussion and activities was on innovations and problems of instruction in education. This experience will benefit my students by encouraging me to implement new and varied teaching techniques.
Also the Arizona Master Seminar was an opportunity to reflect on the reasons that first brought me to education and if I still have the passion to teach. As with many faculty, I was becoming “burned-out” due to the many demands placed upon me as a classroom instructor. Through the experiences at the seminar, I was able to share both frustrations and successes with my colleagues. I came away from this experience more dedicated to my profession, the college, and most importantly, to my students.

Outcomes: In a paragraph or two describe what worked well. Did you accomplish your objective(s)? Were you able to complete your summer project as written? If not, what did you modify and why? What did not go as well as expected, if anything? Were there any surprises? Note: Use the questions as guides for your outcomes. Do not include detailed list of workshops attended, speakers who presented, or a list of items you have seen, heard, or read.

My general objectives for the seminar were to learn from other faculty about their innovations, classroom techniques, and motivational strategies that have been effective for them. During the seminar, the participants did present highly effective and creative methods for eliciting student participation and enhanced performance. I was impressed with the quality of the techniques presented and plan to implement many of them next semester.
Additionally, I served as a conference facilitator and worked with small groups of faculty as they discussed issues, presented projects, and gave demonstration lectures. As the faculty director for the GWCC Center for Teaching and Learning, these experiences were the most rewarding. They reinforced my skills in the areas of group interactions, inservice facilitation, and communications. I came away from this experience with new insights on group facilitation and individual faculty intervention.
The Master Teacher Seminar exceeded my expectations and met all of the objectives stated in the summer project proposal.

Professional Growth: Your own professional growth is a large part of your project. Your professional growth is important to you, your students, your college, and possibly other colleagues. How did project affect you professionally? What skills did you learn? What environments were you working in and how might your summer project influence your teaching or other responsibilities? Did you gain a different perspective? Was it professionally valuable for you?
------------------------------------------------------------
The Arizona Master Teacher Seminar was an experience that is more reflective in nature. The inservices and presentations were excellent. But the opportunity to reflect on the teaching profession, the reasons I chose teaching over other careers and why I’ve have remained in this profession for over 24 years was powerful. The reason why I chose education as a career became clear during the seminar. I came away from this experience with a renewed dedication toward teaching and my role as an educator.
As I spoke to other seminar participants, they had a similar experience. Often, conferences and seminars provide new skills and insights that faculty can bring back to the campus which we can use in the classroom. But often these insights have a short shelf-life. This seminar provided me a sense of renewal and re-dedication to the profession which may last the remainder of my career.

Dissemination: How will you share this information with your colleagues, department, students, or college?
------------------------------------------------------------
The Arizona Master Teacher Seminar is a major faculty development initiative at GWCC. Therefore, select faculty from GateWay plan to speak to the faculty at the fall faculty inservice on their experience. Throughout the academic year, I will continue to share my experiences with faculty from other colleges and promote the 2006 Arizona Master Teacher Seminar. The 2006 Arizona Master Teacher Seminar is scheduled for May 21st to the 25th. There is an information session scheduled for November 3rd. Interested faculty from throughout the district will be invited to attend to learn more about the seminar.
My thanks to the Professional Growth Committee for providing me this opportunity.
