A better focused and organized instructor makes for a better constructed and facilitated learning environment. During this summer project I will worked on my personal organization and leadership skills by designing my own self-paced courses based on Stephen R. Coveys _The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People_, John C. Maxwells _Developing the Leader Within You_, and working through three other self-paced courses offered through the Employee & Organizational Leadership Team (7/5-20/05). Working on these skills not only improved my ability to teach, they also improved the learning and life skills elements I incorporate into my courses plus improve my service to the college and district.
------------------------------------------------------------
Outcomes: In a paragraph or two describe what worked well. Did you accomplish your objective(s)? Were you able to complete your summer project as written? If not, what did you modify and why? What did not go as well as expected, if anything? Were there any surprises? Note: Use the questions as guides for your outcomes. Do not include detailed list of workshops attended, speakers who presented, or a list of items you have seen, heard, or read.
------------------------------------------------------------
The PURPOSE of this project was to improve my own personal life skills, specifically organization and leadership skills, so that I can become a more efficient faculty member. I worked with the following as my desired OUTCOMES:
1. improve time management and work more efficiently, and
2. motivate others to complete their work in a timely manner,
I originally planned to enroll in and attend in two face-to-face workshop/courses offered through the District Offices Employee and Organizational Leadership Team:
* Four Roles of Leadership (District Office, 5/24-26/05);
* Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (Phoenix College, 6/1-22/05);
Some family issues arose; therefore, I ended up constructing my own workshops with books, and workbooks, published by the same individuals the workshops were originally based on. I believe that this method actually worked better than my original plan. I was better able to delve deeply into topics, and subtopics, within the specific areas. I also ended up reading more ancillary material associated with the core books. As planned, I did complete the three self-paces workshops offered through EOLTs office.
While participating in these various workshops/courses I took steps to carefully incorporate strategies into my personal work skills and start strategizing how to incorporate them into my courses and professional service activities. I kept a reflective journal that allowed me to take notes on what I was reading and thinking as well as hypothesize how the ideas would fit into my teaching and service duties.
------------------------------------------------------------
Professional Growth: Your own professional growth is a large part of your project. Your professional growth is important to you, your students, your college, and possibly other colleagues. How did project affect you professionally? What skills did you learn? What environments were you working in and how might your summer project influence your teaching or other responsibilities? Did you gain a different perspective? Was it professionally valuable for you?
------------------------------------------------------------
The personal management and leadership skills I will learn from self-developing and participating in these workshops provided me with the skills and improved time management so that I more efficiently participate in professional development activities.
While reading and working through the _The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People_, as well as the ancillary handbook and other related books, I learned about personal and interpersonal levels of leadership through seeing, thinking, and acting more effectively. While reading and working through the _Developing the Leader Within You_, as well as the ancillary handbook and other related books, I learned about the concepts of influence, priorities, integrity, creating positive change, problem-solving, attitude, people, vision, self-discipline, and staff development as effective processes and tools for leadership. In the three self-paced courses owned by EOLT, I worked with and incorporated practical time and information management skills into both my own life and my courses (especially ENG102).
I was actually surprised at how much the leadership theories affected my understanding of my teaching philosophy. This particular leadership philosophy was very compatible with my teaching philosophy; however, it also got me to rethink specific types of interactions I have with my students (as well as my colleagues and the support staff). I also found that a lot of the materials in the Seven Habits philosophy got me rethinking how I teach writing. The different aspects of the philosophy were an interesting blend of ethics and organization/time management. Ironically, I believe that teaching research writing also needs to delicately balance these same two elements.
------------------------------------------------------------
Dissemination: How will you share this information with your colleagues, department, students, or college?
------------------------------------------------------------
I have already started to indirectly share this information with my students since it has influenced curriculum revisions in my writing courses. I also share bits and pieces, as appropriate, in my classes. I have also shared some of the time and information management elements with colleagues as we discuss our daily/semesterly work processes. I would like to spend a little more time researching, reading, and thinking on the leadership theory connections with pedagogy. I think it would be interesting to hold either an informal or formal teaching/reading/roundtable to discuss the topic.
