The purpose of this project was to explore story telling as a narrative approach to public speaking through independent study by researching digital storytelling from May 16 to June 16, 2005. This research and study gave me exposure to proven techniques, innovative storytelling performance methods, and expert resources. I discovered a variety of online and print material resources by the author Steve Denning, which include The Leader’s Guide to Storytelling, Storytelling for Organizational Change, Squirrel Inc.: A Fable of Leadership Through Storytelling, The Springboard: How Storytelling Ignites Action in Knowledge-Era Organizations. Steve Denning states the following. “The attractions of narrative are obvious. Storytelling is natural and easy and entertaining and energizing. Stories help us understand complexity. Stories can enhance or change perceptions. Stories are easy to remember. Stories are inherently non-adversarial and non-hierarchical. They bypass normal defense mechanisms and engage our feelings.” My goal included how exposure to how various approaches of storytelling could enhance personal reflection performances and understand how technology can provide visual dimension. I conferred with members of the storytelling and digital story telling associations to speak informally with faculty who have designed lessons related to this type of narrative.

Outcomes: In a paragraph or two describe what worked well. Did you accomplish your objective(s)? Were you able to complete your summer project as written? If not, what did you modify and why? What did not go as well as expected, if anything? Were there any surprises? Note: Use the questions as guides for your outcomes. Do not include detailed list of workshops attended, speakers who presented, or a list of items you have seen, heard, or read.
------------------------------------------------------------
This project exceeded my expectations and assisted with the following goals to:
Advance my knowledge of oral and digital storytelling to improve my knowledge and skills of narrative performance skills.
Find workshops related to storytelling.
Understand the concepts of storytelling, e.g. how can this message delivery enhance the speakers ability to present information?
Understand the concepts of storytelling, e.g. how can this message delivery enhance the listening audience ability to retain or retell the information?
Understand how to use storytelling through the informative and persuasive speech.
Discover how students could use storytelling in a professional environment.
Research and learn strategies for organizing and designing basic narrative storytelling principals and methods, giving students an innovative public speaking channel to use in their community and corporate environments.
Learn teaching principals and methods related to digital storytelling, thereby giving students an innovative public speaking channel to use in their community and corporate environments,
Find storytelling opportunities, examples, ideas, activities and techniques that relate to the courses I teach, e.g. Small Group Communication and Communication in Business and Professions.
Research ways of blending graphic dimensions and oral storytelling.
Prior to this research, I had not considered the inclusion of business/industry as a model to develop a storytelling narrative to explain complex ideas or large amounts of information to clarity concepts. I also had not considered narrative storytelling in the context of job interview skills. This experience gave me an opportunity to change my personal paradigm related to speech preparation lesson plans.
I found this research not enough to actually develop a storytelling lesson. I need hands-on experience developing a storytelling product. Therefore, I will be attending the Digital Storytelling Boot camp and Conference from October 4 through October 9, 2005 in San Francisco. The conference and boot camp workshop will allow me to develop new skills and tools for storytelling. The workshop is conducted by Daniel Meadows. While attending the three-day hands-on workshop I will create a digital story using innovative graphic software.

Professional Growth: Your own professional growth is a large part of your project. Your professional growth is important to you, your students, your college, and possibly other colleagues. How did project affect you professionally? What skills did you learn? What environments were you working in and how might your summer project influence your teaching or other responsibilities? Did you gain a different perspective? Was it professionally valuable for you?
------------------------------------------------------------
This project influenced my understanding of storytelling principles and techniques in the following ways:
Improved my knowledge of storytelling as an easy way for students with fear of public speaking to give them confidence as they retell an experience, e.g. service learning.
How to incorporate storytelling into my speech development lesson plan to assist the speaker how to impact the transfer of large amounts of information into a simple, quick and non-threatening way.
How to use storytelling to make it easier for the listening audience to make imaginary leaps into greater understanding and retention of the speaker’s central message.
How to use storytelling examples, ideas, activities and techniques that relate to the courses I teach, e.g. Small Group Communication and Communication in Business and Professions.
Improved my understanding of ways to blend a variety of technology such as graphics, audio and video dimensions to enhance oral storytelling.
Learned a new perspective related to informative and persuasive speaking as a change in the way organizations can use storytelling as a means to explain complex ideas or large amounts of information to clarify concepts.
------------------------------------------------------------
Dissemination: How will you share this information with your colleagues, department, students, or college?
------------------------------------------------------------
I plan to share this information by providing the following groups with a storytelling bibliography and/or demonstration:
MCC Speech Communication Department,
MCC Center for Teaching and Learning,
MCC Distance Learning Group,
DL Mentor Group
District Ocotillo group.
I am the lead faculty for the course Communication in Business and Professions and I plan to share my knowledge with faculty who teach presentation skills.
I plan to use this information to develop storytelling lesson plans to improve my students’ ability to present informative and persuasive speeches. This information will assist me to teach students to tell their civic engagement stories, personal cultural heritage, interview skills and other types of business and industry presentations.
