(Abstract)
Recent educational research and legislation has focused on teacher quality and the role of community colleges in teacher education. (SECTQ, Schuhmann). In efforts to ensure competence in responding to the challenging realities faced by practicing teachers, Mesa Community College’s School of Education has incorporated strategic social structures and interactions within its programs and courses to promote integrative learning. The Carnegie Foundation defines integrative learning as learning that involves making connections "across courses, over time, and between campus and community life" - indeed "one of the most important goals and challenges of higher education." (AACU) To prepare quality teachers responsive to student needs and constant change, integrative learning must lie at the heart of our programs and instruction.
My MIL project explored how programmatic social structures and student interactions impact students' ability to integrate content knowledge within authentic contexts. Recognizing that the acquisition of knowledge is insufficient to effectively prepare aspiring teachers to respond appropriately within authentic teaching contexts, the focus of this project was on content integration through targeted learning experiences. These learning experiences included Teaching and Learning Communities (TLC) Program participation and specific course components, namely service learning, small group projects, and webboard dialogue.
