details

As an MIL Fellow for 2005-2006, I explored the use of audio narratives to reinforce course concepts in Intercultural Communication (COM263). The major course project required composition, audio production, and written reflection on brief narratives ("Audio Postcards") that illustrated intercultural learning.

Essentially, the project focused on the effectiveness of narrative as a way of organizing essential intercultural concepts. My idea was that I might be able to assign personal cultural stories and have students compose and produce audio recordings, thus stripping some of the technological challenges of using student-produced digital stories in discipline-based classes.

Since many people have asked about the technical components of the project, here's the scoop: production eventually reduced to my iPod™ and portable speakers (iFusion™), two digital recorders (Eiderol R-1™), two USB microphones, referrals to free recording software (Audacity™), and a former student who agreed to serve as technical assistant. As often happens, some students charted their own technological course. Students delivered their recordings to me via CD or in the Digital Dropbox of Blackboard course management system.

FINAL REPORT ABSTRACT: This project addressed the general research question: “Can students’ intercultural learning be advanced through composing and producing audio recordings of their own personal stories and connecting them to core concepts of intercultural communication?” In the first half of the course, students were introduced to a variety of two to three-minute recordings as lesson introductions. In the midterm exam, they identified and described a personal episode they believed illustrated course concepts. Midterm, they (1) learned a narrative mapping technique; (2) identified and mapped personal narratives; (3) composed and produced their own recordings; (4) reflected on the content and process; (5) mapped classmates’ recordings; and (6) participated in a summative assessment. Results suggest that personal involvement and reflection required by the project contribute to student engagement, clarification of past experience, and deeper understanding of key concepts. Thanks for the most recent note on this project, Holly,

This is an amazing project--it supports ideas related to most recent discussions about the term electracy (the step beyond literacy, I think--the ability to add the affective to the cognitive in learning experiences through digital processes (See Ulmer, 2003).

Yes, I would love to see the full report.
