details

(This initiative is Phoenix College's 2006 Innovation of the Year.)

The International Story Share Festival is the culmination of a semester of collaboration by five teachers at Phoenix College. ENG107 and ENG040 students write cultural stories or letters; RDG091 students read and evaluate the stories; and COM120 students orally read the stories to an audience in a festival presentation.

The Story Share Festival at Phoenix College is a collaborative effort of the ESL English, Reading, and Communication departments. It involves a semester's efforts by the teachers and students, combining assignments and responsibilities, culminating in a presentation of the top examples of achievements by the students in the participating classes. The presentations are accompanied by a booklet containing the ten to twelve
stories judged to be the best. The booklets are given to the audience members as well as the students. The participating students are given certificates of achievement and
participation. The number of students participating in this collaboration has increased from 20 the first year, to almost 100 students this year. Each year the festival has favorably impressed audience members. Linda Rosenthal has commented on the Festival's merits of cultural awareness, diversity inclusion and student pride in themselves and in their college.

The Story Share Festival originated in 2001 with COM120 students who do not speak English as their first language. They were instructed to write a story that had been told to them by their parents or grandparents. They read and edited grammar mistakes in the stories. Ten speakers were chosen to practice and read the stories at the first Story Share Festival. The event was sponsored by the communication department and the international center. The audience was comprised of the student's family, friends and some faculty members. In that audience were a reading faculty member and a group of reading students who were very taken by the program. As a result two reading classes and one English class were added to the process.

In 2002, ENG 071 students wrote fables from their cultures, RDG 091 students studied the fables and learned to evaluate them using a rubric. They chose the ten best stories. COM 120 students practiced reading the fables with proper pronunciation and preformed the oral readings at the second Story Share Festival.

In 2003, a different theme was chosen – Letters to Home. ENG 071 students were instructed to write letters to someone in their home country. Another ESL faculty member joined in this part of the process with the students in ESL 040. The focus in the letters of both classes was to include their impressions of America. Reading students read and evaluated the letters and Communication students once again practiced and performed at the third Story Share Festival. This year a Powerpoint presentation showing pictures of the writers, readers, and speakers was created by the ESL faculty member and was presented at the beginning and end of the festival along with music from the different cultures.

Each year after the presentations, students are congratulated by family, friends, and faculty at a reception. The festivals are very exciting evenings and students are very proud of their accomplishments and participation!
