Participated the Blackboard training provided at PVCC during Summer Technology Fun Week 2007, July 9-12. The training sessions were conducted each morning from 8:30 – 11:30 and included Blackboard Course Setup, Communication Tools, Gradebook, Assignments and Assessments. From 12:30-4:30 each afternoon, I practiced the concepts that had been presented in the morning sessions to master the skills I needed to develop an online course. I worked well beyond the week of the project with the technology trainer, instructional technologist and fellow faculty and subsequent to the project was able to develop an online course.

Outcomes: In a paragraph or two describe what worked well. Did you accomplish your objective(s)? Were you able to complete your summer project as written? If not, what did you modify and why? What did not go as well as expected, if anything? Were there any surprises? Note: Use the questions as guides for your outcomes. Do not include detailed list of workshops attended, speakers who presented, or a list of items you have seen, heard, or read.

The Blackboard training went very well. Having the assistance of the technology trainer, instructional technologist and fellow faculty in the afternoons to help me master and apply the skills presented were especially helpful. After I completed the summer project training, I was able to develop a complete online course incorporating course content with web links, a discussion board, messaging, tests, a survey and the gradebook. I was challenged with all new course content as well as new course assessment tools to learn as well as Blackboard so did not have time to incorporate video or group work into my course. My plan is to attend training this academic year to learn these skills as well so that I can revise my existing course to include these additional features where appropriate to enhance student learning.
------------------------------------------------------------
Professional Growth: Your own professional growth is a large part of your project. Your professional growth is important to you, your students, your college, and possibly other colleagues. How did project affect you professionally? What skills did you learn? What environments were you working in and how might your summer project influence your teaching or other responsibilities? Did you gain a different perspective? Was it professionally valuable for you?
------------------------------------------------------------
I did learn the skills I need to develop an online course using the Blackboard course management tool. I can apply these skills in a variety of learning environments not just online learning to enhance student engagement. Having a variety of resources available during the training and practice times was especially helpful. I have been and will continue to be a campus leader in distance learning. I have used the Midas tool for many years. Although not as full-featured as Blackboard, Midas was a very dependable tool. Blackboard has many more features that can be incorporated into course development to enhance student engagement. Blackboard, however, has not proven to be very dependable. I will, however, continue to work to develop my Blackboard skills as this is the tool that the district has chosen to support. As enrollment figures in distance learning indicate, online learning is in demand.
------------------------------------------------------------
Dissemination: How will you share this information with your colleagues, department, students, or college?
------------------------------------------------------------
I will continue my leadership role in distance learning at PVCC working with my colleagues to find better solutions to online learning challenges. I will continue to serve on the Online Learning Committee and Choices Coordinating Team. As a division chair, I will continue to mentor both residential and adjunct faculty as they incorporate online learning tools into their instruction.
