summary

In the last few years, MCCCD has offered increasingly more courses through distance learning. The MCCCD libraries are poised to offer services for students who will be conducting research for their classes from off campus sites.

details

Project Description: The Maricopa Online Librarians, Spring 2001, is a pilot project providing library instruction and reference service via live online chat and Internet co-browsing software to all MCCCD students conducting library research from off campus. Using the AOL Instant Messenger chatware, plus a product called Hipbone; students are able to learn from the online librarian how to search the Internet or an online database. The co-browsing software makes it possible for the librarians and students to see the same web screens simultaneously. This technology enables “point-of-need” teaching. The librarian is able to teach the student search strategy methods as well as selection and critical evaluation of electronic sources.

Project Results: With the money allocated, the pilot project was able to operate from Feb 20 –
May 2, on Sundays from 7-11 p.m., Mon-Wed 8-11 p.m. We had a total of thirty contacts. The busiest night of the week was Wednesdays. The questions were of the same diverse nature as questions received at the Reference Desk. They ranged from needing technical assistance with accessing the electronic resources to in depth instruction in how to search for articles on a topic.
Since the Spring 2001 pilot, MCCCD libraries acquired the Virtual Reference Toolkit software from LSSI, which provides an integrated chat and collaborative browsing environment. Curently the Librarians Online service, as it has come to be known, operates Monday-Friday 10am-4pm during the academic year. 18-19 librarians district-wide volunteer office hours to staff the service. Future plans include offering evening and weekend hours once funding is available. During Fall 2001 Librarians Online fielded 177 chat sessions. Spring 2002, 216 sessions were logged.

Project Dissemination: While the pilot was underway, marketing of the service occurred at the district-wide level via electronic mail. Flyers and bookmarks were distributed in library instruction sessions, as well as in a number of English classes across the district. Final reports were presented to the district’s Library Technology Group and the District Library Council. As a result, the Phase II of the pilot, a daytime only service, will begin during mid-Fall 2001.
