summary |
Bill Evans came to Chandler-Gilbert Community College for three days of intensive work in Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundaments, and its application to dance technique. Additionally, Don Halquist accompanied Bill Evans and worked daily with students on best teaching practices for dance. This "extra" was provided within the cost of the grant. |
details |
This workshop provided and intensive experience in Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, and their application to dance technique. Best teaching practices were demonstrated in the course of the workshop by Bill Evans a nationally known dancer, choreographer and master teacher with a daily reflection of the work done by Don Halquist, nationally known master teacher. Students were introduced to and explored:
Laban Effort/Shape principles
Bartenieff Fundamentals
Bill Evans technique and pedagogy principles
Individual internal body connectivity
Igniting and maintaining student involvement in the classroom/studio
The daily schedule was:
9-10:30 Bartenieff Fundamentals
10:45-12:30 Evan's Technique
12:30-1:30 Lunch with seminar/discussion
1:30-3:15 Laban based Improvisation and Composition
3:30-5:00 Becoming an Effective Teacher
------------------------------------------------------------
How did the project improve, advance, or enhance student learning? Please provide specific examples.
------------------------------------------------------------
This workshop provided several very important opportunities for improving, advancing, and enhancing student learning.
1. It provided an opportunity for students to experience Bartenieff Fundamentals, whose main goal is to retrain bodies to become the most mind/body connected and efficient movers possible.
2. It provided an opportunity for students to experience the way in which these principles are at work in Evan's technique.
3. It provided an opportunity for students to explore the Laban movement principles and their application to improvisation and choreography.
4. It provided an arena for students to analyze teaching practices and opportunities to apply some of the principles in future teaching situations.
5.It allowed students to analyze their own personal movement practices and find way to improve their own performance life.
------------------------------------------------------------
How did you evaluate your project's success? What did it tell you?
------------------------------------------------------------
The evaluation of this event was not as concrete as other grants I have completed. College policies changed from the time the grant was written to its implementation, and while the grant was completed very successfully (I will talk about that later in this section), I did not have the support to complete my usual evaluation process.
The workshop was well attended. We had people from a variety of backgrounds, a variety of colleges, and various level of dance experience attend. A total of 31 people enrolled and attended all or some portion of the event. One attendee is a master Pilates teacher, 6 were teachers in the MCCCD, 4 were teachers in local high schools, and the rest were dance students from CGCC.
I read the reflections written by students, observed/participated in the workshops when time permitted, and spoke with those in attendance. The material learned in the workshop is already become a part of several teachers classes. I have noticed increased mind/body connection in the students who attended the event, and have noticed some of the improvisational/composition work has begun to inform students' choreography.
I didn't not get more formal evaluations completed by the group because the new policies meant there was no support and I was the janitor and caterer for the event as well as the director.
------------------------------------------------------------
What is your plan to share this project with others?
------------------------------------------------------------
The material has worked its way into our teaching practices and has worked its way into teaching practices around the East Vally. I plan to purchase some of Bill's videos, but did not get video clips of the event as I had planned. I had too many jobs to attend to during the event to get video clips.
------------------------------------------------------------
What, if anything, will happen in the future with this project?
------------------------------------------------------------
This project will live on in the lives of those who attended as they move forward in their teaching and performing lives. This material is very important to the development of a dancer/teacher and is not often presented by such master teachers. I would like to bring both Bill and Don back at some future time for a longer stay.
------------------------------------------------------------
What, if anything, would you do differently?
------------------------------------------------------------
I would not schedule a workshop over the winter break. While it seemed like the best time to get Bill here with the fewest conflicts in classes and jobs, it turned out to be a terrible time to be at the college. CGCC now closes the campus on certain days and the lack of support made it very difficult to do the grant. I had to be all things to all people and it meant I had little time to make the guest artists feel welcomed or to do the kind of video-taping and archiving I usually do.
Also, I neglected to include an accompanist for the event and that set my school budget back $600 in a climate where money is tight.
