summary

The Health Assessment Nursing Documentation System (HANDS) was created as a means by which our students can document clinical findings from hospitalized or simulation patients. It was created using FileMaker Pro, piloted and evaluated.

details

This project involved research, creation and evaluation of a documentation tool that allows students to use the steps of the nursing process, SBAR and critical thinking when caring for their patient in a clinical or simulation setting. The tool is available in an electronic format for students to complete from home, campus or on a PDA in the clinical setting.

------------------------------------------------------------
How did the project improve, advance, or enhance student learning? Please provide specific examples.
------------------------------------------------------------
The tool is currently in the beta-testing phase and will be web based by this summer. Students evaluation of the tool reflect satisfaction in its ability to involve critical thinking with documentation. They feel it provides a similar situation to what they are seeing in clinical, and can be used without restrictions (the issue they were having in the hospital).

------------------------------------------------------------
How did you evaluate your project's success? What did it tell you?
------------------------------------------------------------
Evaluation included a pilot group of 60 students and 10 faculty comments and feedback. The tool provided me with suggestions for improvement. It supported that the tool was beneficial, and worth the effort and time it took to create. Most students felt it filled a need in their learning.

------------------------------------------------------------
What is your plan to share this project with others?
------------------------------------------------------------
In December, 2008, I presented this at a national nuring informatics Webinar on electronic documentation. I will also be presenting it at the NLN Summit in Philadelphia in September.

------------------------------------------------------------
What, if anything, will happen in the future with this project?
------------------------------------------------------------
Currently, I am working with information technology department and legal to explore the national expansion of this tool for college revenue. It has a large following of nurse educators, and interest in its widespread distribution.

------------------------------------------------------------
What, if anything, would you do differently?
------------------------------------------------------------
It's been a very worthwhile project, and gone surprisingly smoothly.
