summary |
Syllaweb Summer Workgroups are semi-structured development environments for faculty who are interested in using technology in various ways to support teaching and learning. Participants are groups of peers (from different departments and with differing levels of expertise) who share responsibility for contributing information, successes, failures, questions, answers, and ideas in an online discussion area. Additionally, the participants work independently on technology-related projects relevant to their teaching areas, publishing their work on web pages linked from the Summer Workgroup website. |
details |
Syllaweb Summer Workgroups began at GCC in 1999 with a group of faculty members from different departments who worked collaboratively and individually to develop web pages to support their courses. Participants created and developed a a web page project relevant to their teaching assignment while communicating with colleagues in an online discussion group on a regular basis throughout the summer. Face-to-face support was provided by the facilitators, Larry Bohlender and Marla DeSoto, and the staff of the GCC Innovation Center and Training and Education Development Center on an as-needed basis.
The Syllaweb Summer Workgroups have been conducted each summer and focused on a different aspect of technology integration. The group in 2000 continued with further development of web pages to support their courses. In 2001, the Syllaweb Summer Workgroup explored the idea of online teaching and learning and used Blackboard as their communication tool. During 2002, the Syllaweb Summer Workgroup plans to explore hybrid courses, creating materials for their own hybrid courses and discussing the aspects of hybrid learning using an Exchange server web discussion area.
