summary

CIS105 activity. Student teams debate the pro or con of a scenario that involves computers & a difficult ethical situation.

details

The text for the first few weeks of CIS105 is a survey of computer history and current issues. It came to my attention, due to an informal discussion, that ethics is an area that is not covered. With information from another text, I created the following class activity:

Students are organized into teams of 3-5 people. They are presented with a scenario and a set of basic criteria for making an ethical decision. They must prepare a defense of both agreement and disagreement with a decision, but they do not know which they will have to present. On the assigned day, they will be told which side they are on and debate with a team on the other side. Points are awarded to team members, no matter which side they are on, if they show that they have used the criteria for an ethical decision. After each debate, the rest of the class votes on the winner.

The objective of this exercise is to touch on the important issue of ethics, as well as to demonstrate that ethical decisions are difficult no matter which side you are on.

Many students are in CIS105 simply because of it's articulation with university, and are not particularly interested in computers. This activity always leads to a lively discussion and seems to promote a positive attitude toward the course.

Depends on the books used. My computer class has a whole chapter on computer ethics.
