summary

In the Spring of 2002, I used a new online tool, GetFast, for course evaluations in my Anthropology courses.

details

This semester I utilized a new tool for evaluating my teaching and learning environment for my ASB222 and ASB223 courses. In this evaluation, I combined these into one data pool, but I did not need to do that. I want to share this evaluation process because it has some clear benefits over what we tend to traditionally use in the Maricopa District as a means to evaluation teaching and learning.

In place of the usual form evaluation, this evaluation is performed on-line. Mount Royal College in Canada provides this service free to anyone who enrolls and sets up an evaluation. There is flexibility in that you can determine the questions you wish to ask students about your specific teaching and learning issues. It is easy to set up an evaluation. What is most attractive is that you can obtain results in both tabular and graphic formats as well as downloading data (and updating data) using an Excel spreadsheet format.

The amount of time that we traditionally use for evaluating courses is relative to a short time for students to fill in information in contrast to the time secretaries take to prepare packages and for testing centers to process results. At least in the case of Mesa, the results often come back in a format that you can not manipulate nor often interpret. It is much more difficult to set the parameters for the evaluation in a traditional sense as well.

In this “getfast” evaluation, you can be assured of speedy return of results and ease of use. Most importantly, the flexibility of input and output is beneficial to using the results to evaluate in a more effect manner what is going on in terms of teaching and learning issues.
