summary

This package includes a link to my Blackboard sites for Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II. The sites contain annotated images of histology and gross anatomy for all my labs. A sample of images are provided in this package, under "Supplements". Copies of the images as either PowerPoint or JPEG files are availabe on CD, just email me with the request.

details

The purpose of the MCLI Learning grant was to create histological images as an integral teaching tool for Human Anatomy and Physiology. For a variety of reasons, many students find histology extremely difficult. One difficulty is that access to microscopes and slides is limited to lab hours only, thus severely limiting students' ability to directly study the material. To increase student access to histological images, I created over 100 digital histology images, annotated them, and incorporated them into the Human Anatomy and Physiology Blackboard sites for student home study.
The student response was extremely positive. Prior to the addition of the histology images, the average number of times a student accessed a Blackboard file was 79 times per semester. In the Fall 2001 semester, when the digital images were first added, the average number increased to 453 times per semester, and the average number increased again in the Spring 2002 semester to 585 times per semester. On course evaluations, 97% of the students rated the images as "very useful" (the most positive option on the survey).

The students liked the digital histology images and home access so much that they insisted I add other annotated images. The Blackboard sites now include images of the skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, digestive, and reproductive systems. These images include models and dissections.
