This proposal involves the development and implementation of a field-based learning module that will incorporate the area between Dobson road and the Main Library (Purgatory Flat) into a major Geology laboratory activity. This activity serves several needs, but the main goal is to have students use their lab-based skills (i.e., constructing, reading, and interpreting a geologic map, using a Brunton compass, etc.) to solve a geologic problem outside of the classroom in a more "real-world" environment. During each of the Fall 2001 and Spring 2002 semesters, this lab module was used by more than 600 students in three Introductory-level Geology lab classes (GLG 103, GLG 104, and GLG 111). This activity has now been incorporated into two newly published MCC lab manuals for GLG 103 (Physical Geology) and GLG 104 (Historical Geology). Note!
