summary |
CHM 095 (1-credit review of CHM 151) has been modified for online delivery. The course consists of modules, each containing objectives, a self-test (with answers), and page references to the current CHM 152/4 text (Brown, LeMay, and Bursten, 8th Ed.) |

Backgroud: The CHM 095 course was created several years ago when I realized that many of my CHM 152/4 students were having problems because their CHM 151 course was taken years ago. CHM 095 reviews only those CHM 151 topics directly applicable to CHM 152/4 and omits large sections of theory. It was offered several times in lecture format during the week immediately preceeding the start of the semester, and students did appreciate not having to "waste" a whole semester retaking CHM 151. There were two problems with the lecture approach. First, not all the students needed work on the same topics, and second, evening students often could not come for the week of morning classes. The course seemed a good prospect for conversion to a Web-based format.
Success and work in progress. The software package that I originally chose for the project did not work well with chemical formulas and equations, so I used "Flash 5" to create the modules (module outline below). I also had problems converting my original "Flash 1" animations to "Flash 5", but am enrolled in Tom Foley's "Flash" course here at GCC this fall, and hope I will become more proficient in the program. On the positive side: I did complete the modules and study materials and offered the Internet course twice, for two or three weeks, starting the week before classes. I held virtual and face-to-face office hours, and students called, came in, or e-mailed progress and problems. Some students opted to repeat the entire CHM 151 course, and some continued with CHM 095, but hopefully the retention rate in CHM 152/4 improved as a direct or indirect result of the project! Internet 095 is now in the schedule for Fall and Spring semesters. GCC will be changing 152/3 texts for the Spring '03, so the page references will then be modified for the current edition of "Ebbing".
Module Details: Students work from a "Module Map" indicating the various ways the modules can be sequenced. This was created by considering pre-requisite skills for each module. The individual modules are:
Matter and Energy (basic concepts and definitions)
Metric System
Dimensional Analysis
Algebra Review (only that requiredfor CHM 151)
Intro. to Mole Concept (single substances)
Moles and Reactions (concept)
Stoichiometry (Calculations, including soln's)
Energy Relationships
Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
Bonding Basics
Solutions (concepts)
Reaction types (only single and double replacement)
