summary

This module develops concepts related to water, sound, and light waves. Math students collect/analyze data and make models using case studies of tidal and sound waves. Biology students use a case study involving light waves and the process of photosynthesis. Students use Blackboard technology to form a community of learners to further explore the interdisciplinary nature of waves.

details

Society's need for excellence in science education cannot be overstated. One of the key needs is to produce students who have an increased understanding of the scientific issues and phenomena that affect our everyday lives. In addition, we must reinforce fundamental scientific principles through real life applications. To this end, this module provides students with multiple perspectives on the theme of "waves," including water (tidal), sound, and light waves. Based on three case studies, the module requires math students to collect data, analyze the data, and make mathematical models using tidal and sound waves. The concept of waves is conveyed in the biology classes by studying light waves and the process of photosynthesis. Further, to explore the interdisciplinary nature of waves, students use the Blackboard technology asynchronously. As students see commonalties in thinking across various subject areas, their learning is raised to a higher level. This exposure to multiple perspectives of the same science concept fosters a community of learners and strengthens critical thinking skills through real life applications.
