This Problem-Based Learning (PBL) module requires students to use information from geology to learn about different copper containing minerals as well as about the use of topographic and geologic maps as applied to copper mining. Chemistry students analyze the "ore" samples to determine the amount of copper present, while environmental biology students share information on the environmental impacts of copper mining and look at a specific site to determine the type of impacts that could be expected. All three components are required in a "capstone" paper/project.

At one time copper was one of the four major economic resources for the state of Arizona. It remains a major employer statewide, especially in southeastern Arizona. However, most students living in the Phoenix metro area know little or nothing about copper, copper mines, or the environmental impacts of mining. The module topic fits in well with competencies and concepts that currently form part of the curriculum in geology, chemistry, and environmental biology. By incorporating common course competencies within a relevant context, students begin to see connections between what they study in the textbook and the world around them. The module also provides majors students the opportunity to explain challenging concepts such as electrochemistry and electro winning to a non-major and will facilitate students with different levels of science expertise to work together on a common problem, simulating a project team in an environmental consulting company.
