A module created for the collaboration between biology and mathematics students. Student research teams use biological, mathematical, and research methods to identify types of blood cell diseases. They make predictions and verify hypotheses using qualitative and quantitative approaches.

details

The goal of this module is to provide students with a research experience. It incorporates content, communication, and skills essential for a team to develop problem-solving skills. Students enrolled in a biology course form research teams with members enrolled in a mathematics course. Students then have the opportunity to investigate different microscope slide preparations relating to specific blood cell diseases. Biology students take digital images of prepared slides and create a hypothesis regarding the disease they believe the slide preparation indicates. In addition to reviewing literature available regarding diseases, students need to prove their hypothesis by quantifying cell characteristics with the assistance of the mathematics students.
