The act of beginning to compile a portfolio for assessment -- individual course, gen ed, program, career, etc. -- can be daunting for students. Here is a series of exercises to help students transform a "working" course notebook into a "showcase" portfolio. |

Spread these exercises over a few weeks prior to producing the final portfolio. They may be given as homework or used for class activities. Stages #2 and #5 are especially useful as class activities with the instructor "at the ready" to answer questions as they arise. Preface all steps with a reminder that a portfolio answers the questions: "What can I offer that showcases my knowledge, skill/talent and/or experience?" 1. Remove all teacher handouts and printed material not actually produced by you [the student] from the notebook. Cull all teacher handouts, assignment sheets, etc. and leave only work produced by the student. 2. Attach a post-it to each item left in the notebook as follows: YES = to be definitely included NO = to be definitely eliminated MAYBE=requires a second thought and possible revising, reworking or reformatting 3. Rethink, revise, rework, and/or reformat the MAYBEs. 4.Reformat individual selections to remove all evidence them as coursework or assignments (delete headings, course and semester references, instructor feedback, etc.) After all, a future "outside audience" won't understand a reference such as "Chapter Five" or "Homework #1." You may choose to date some items, but titles should be very specific to the subject and point. 5. List the final contents and briefly (2-3 sentences maximum) identify your rationale for including it. In other words, explain what each showcases about your knowledge, skill/talent and/or skill. Eventually, this list may serve as a "reflective" "Table of Contents" for the entire portfolio or at the beginning of each section. Note!
