I've settled on a way to exempt "A" students from the final exam AND get free tutoring for other students in the class who may need help. |
details |
Have you ever noticed that if a student has earned A's on every exam that you've given for the semester, that student is likely to get an "A" on the final, as well? At one point, I simply exempted anyone with an A in the class as of the last day of the semester (exclusive of any extra credit points, of course) from taking the final. But then came that annoying student who rolled his eyes at me for the last week of class, because he knew he wasn't going to have to sit for the final -- why would I force him to sit through one more week of economics when no exam was at stake?
The new and improved strategy is as follows: IF you have an A as of the last day of class, AND if you are willing to commit to tutoring another student in the class for the final exam, you will be exempted from the final. This way, the A students have the reward of one less exam, but are still obligated to complete the course material in order to be able to comply with the tutoring commitment. It seems to have helped some of those "at the margin" students who are willing to seek help -- the tutors can provide help not just with content, but with study and test-taking strategies as well.
