summary |
This simple Excel spreadsheet will let you randomly select students to call on in class. |
details |
Using the random function in Excel, this simple spreadsheet is adapted from one I saw used in a class I took at ASU. It was a class in collaborative teaching techniques, and it is a high tech version of the spinner that some teachers use on an overhead projector.
This spreadsheet is one I use in my class. I have 4 students grouped with their desks pushed together facing one another. By typing a number in one cell, I can set it for any number of groups, and another cell lets you set how many students are around each table. By pushing the F9 key, new random numbers are selected and you call on the person indicated on the spreadsheet (after assigning seat numbers around each table at the beginning of class). Students never know when they will be called on and so are more likely to be prepared, and you can't be accused of "picking on me!" If you don't have a PC projector in your classroom, you could have a student verify the numbers from a computer monitor or even a laptop.
