summary |
This learning community pairs ENG101 and ENH241 in the fall and ENG102 and ENH242 in the spring. In the fall semester, students use examples from pre-Civil war literature, such as essays, personal narratives and letters, as models for their own writing. In the spring semester, students read, conduct research and write papers about literature from the Civil War to the present. |

In addition to experiencing the pedagogical benefits that come with learning communities (increased engagement, deeper learning, stronger sense of community), the students in "Journeys into American Life" are able to pursue their interest in literature while fulfilling their writing requirements. The learning community model also allows for exciting activities out of the classroom, such as a trip to the Boyce-Thompson arboretum for a hands-on discussion of transcendentalism and a trip to the Herberger theater to see a Eugene O'Neill play.
By integrating humanities courses with composition courses, some of my colleagues and I have been able offer a greater variety of humanities courses. I have also found that the continuity of teaching this learning community as a year-long course has enabled me to engage the writing skills and critical thinking skills of the students at new, higher levels. The blending of the course competencies has been a challenge, but the addition of the American literature has rejuvenated my writing assignments and given them a stronger focus.

I have two Blackboard sites set up for each semester of the course. You can access different parts of the website to see how the two courses have been integrated.
