The project blends primary research (the service learning component) with secondary research (internet and textbook information) in order to produce a more comprehensive understanding of course content through a mini research project. |
details |
This assignment provides a means of incorporating the writing across the curriculum goals, reinforcing course content, and involving students at a personal level. It has been evolving for the past three semesters. Currently it requires prewriting, service learning, reflection, research, and then a formal analysis of the topic. Students choose from a pre-selected set of sites for their service learning project. These sites are provided by the Office of Student Life at CGCC.
This project was initially designed for Into the Streets, which is a one day service learning experience for students. However, it has also been used for the Honors lecture series, the Hunger Banquet, and extended service learning projects.
The benefit to this assignment is two fold. First it prepares students for the experience prior to them arriving. This preknowledge has focused their attention, thus their experience has been more meaningful.
Second, the criteria for grading the assignment is listed. Creating a grading rubric is easy.
