summary

This web quest involves having students work in groups to perform web research related to Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things, gather results, present the results, and receive an evaluation of their presentation.

details

The creative guise of the web quest is shown through the following introductory prompt from one of the attached assignment sheets:

“You are a journalist working for Sixty Minutes. The Sixty Minutes team has just found out that the award-winning and politically-active author, Arundhati Roy, is scheduled to tape an interview in several hours. An error has been made through some sort of scheduling snafu because the team has been erroneously preparing all week to interview Randy Johnson. The producer has asked your team to research Arundhati Roy: The Writer for 15 minutes and to give a concise briefing on the topic to the rest of the team including Mike Wallace so that he will be ready for the interview.”

Besides exploring Arundhati Roy: The Writer, groups also work to research Kerala: Communism and Consumption; Mary Roy; Kathakali: The Classical Dance-Drama Of Kerala; Ayemenem; India’s Caste System; Globalization in India; and Dams and Politics.

From their research, note-taking and presenting, and from other groups’ presentations, students will start to build a foundation to better enjoy and understand the novel.

Note that an evaluation rubric is available in each attached webquest.
